Mainmorte Law and Legal Definition
Mainmorte is a French term which means the lord's right to a share of his men's personal estate after death. During the medieval days, when a peasant tenant died without a direct heir ready to assume his tenancy and debts, the peasant's property reverted to his landlord. The heirs who lived away from home had to pay huge tax to assume possession of the deceased peasant's possessions.
