Marriage of Convenience Law and Legal Definition
A marriage of convenience is a marriage orchestrated for personal gain or some other sort of strategic purpose such as immigration. Such a marriage may be concentrated for reasons other than the reasons of relationship, family, or love. Marriages of convenience are often contracted to exploit various legal loopholes. A couple may wed for reasons of citizenship or right of abode, or to hide one partner’s homosexuality because being openly gay is punishable or potentially detrimental.
