The term matron has several meaning. It is termed for a married woman, generally an elderly married woman. A matron may be a widow, especially a mother of dignity, mature age, and established social position.
Matron is also a woman who acts as a supervisor or monitor in a public institution, such as a school, hospital, or prison. Matron is the job title of a very senior nurse or head nurse in several countries.
