Mechanic Law and Legal Definition
A mechanic is a person who provides certain services, such as plumbing, painting, construction, carpentry, or someone who provides building supplies and materials. It may be a person who installs, maintains, relocates, improves, alters or repairs real or personal property. Therefore, general contractors or subcontractors who improve real property are considered "mechanics" and are given mechanic's lien rights. An auto mechanic who repairs an auto may also obtain a mechanic's lien on the auto. State laws governing mechanic's liens vary, so local law should be consulted.
