Merchant Marine Law and Legal Definition
Merchant Marine refers to the fleet of U.S. civilian owned merchant ships. It may be owned by government or the private sector. Private sectors are those who are engaged in commerce or transportation of goods and services in and out of the navigable waters of the U.S. The Merchant marine has the duty to transport cargo and passengers during peace time. Merchant marine also aids the U.S. navy in times of war by delivering troops and supplies for the military.
