Merchant Seaman Law and Legal Definition
Merchant seaman means a sailor appointed by a private vessel. A merchant seaman is not the same as a person employed in public or military service. The term merchant seaman includes person’s employed Merchant Marine, especially in the U.S., and the Merchant Navy, elsewhere, especially in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries.
