Model Year Law and Legal Definition
According to 15 USCS § 2821 (12), [Title 15. Commerce and Trade; Chapter 55. Petroleum Marketing Practices; Octane Disclosure] the term model year means “a manufacturer's annual production period (as determined by the Federal Trade Commission) for motor vehicles or a class of motor vehicles. If a manufacturer has no annual production period, the term "model year" means the calendar year.”
According to 10 CFR 490.2 [Title 10 Energy; Chapter II Department of Energy; Subchapter D Energy Conservation; Part 490 Alternative Fuel Transportation Program; Subpart A General Provisions], the term Model Year means “the period from September 1 of the previous calendar year through August 31.”
