Party of the first part is a phrase used in documents such as deeds and contracts to avoid repeating the name of the persons first mentioned in it. As used in a written contract, it identifies one of the parties entering into the contract. The other party is referred to as "the party of the second part.” However, better practice is to identify the parties by a short form of their name.
