Peine Forte Et Dure Law and Legal Definition
Peine forte et dure is a cruel and relentless punishment formerly inflicted in England. Such punishment was inflicted on a person accused of felony and who refused to plead. It was imposed as a penalty for his obstinacy. The accused was laid down and as much weight was put upon him as he could bear, and more, until he died. This barbarous punishment has been abolished.
