Pignus Law and Legal Definition
Pignus means “a pledge” or “the contract of pledge”. This is known as one of the real contracts of the civil law which consisted of the delivery of the object pledged. It gave rise to actions directa and contractia. A pledge is given voluntarily and if as a matter of contract, it is known as pignus conventionale.
