Preference Categories Law and Legal Definition
Preference categories refer to the categories in which relatives of U.S. citizens and permanent residents apply for an immigrant visa. These categories in which they apply are ranked by preference from highest to lowest. A certain number of visas are granted to each category every year. The waiting period for each category depends upon the number of visas in the category.
