Prison Contraband Law and Legal Definition
Prison Contraband refers to property that is illegal to possess inside a prison. Correctional facility regulations prohibit prisoners from possessing certain harmful or potentially dangerous items. For example NY CLS Penal § 205.00 defines prison contraband as " any article or thing which a person confined in a detention facility is prohibited from obtaining or possessing by statute, rule, regulation or order”. In New York, promoting prison contraband is a class A misdemeanor.

NY CLS Penal § 205.20 Promoting prison contraband in the second degree
A person is guilty of promoting prison contraband in the second degree when:
1. He knowingly and unlawfully introduces any contraband into a detention facility; or
2. Being a person confined in a detention facility, he knowingly and unlawfully makes, obtains or possesses any contraband.
Promoting prison contraband in the second degree is a class A misdemeanor.
