Prison Law Law and Legal Definition
Prison law is an area of law that addresses the human rights and representation needs of incarcerated men and women. It also includes laws relating to prison management.
Cases of being denied medical treatment, being housed in unsafe facilities, and facing sentences that seem excessive for the weight of the crimes committed can be common for lawyers dealing with prison laws. They also cover issues relating to: life sentence prisoners (lifers); parole Board hearings; recall prisoners and release on license; disciplinary matters; re-categorization and transfers; and prisoner’s rights. Overcrowding also can be a pressing legal concern. Many prison populations are outgrowing the capacity of their facility.
