A protected area is a geographically defined area which is designated or regulated, and managed to achieve specific conservation objectives (CBD) in the environmental law context. The CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas provides a globally accepted framework for creating comprehensive, effectively managed, and well funded national and regional protected area systems around the globe.
