Psychotherapy Session Law and Legal Definition
A psychotherapy session is defined as a certain time slot, often about an hour, focused on mental health goals. It may consist of group therapy or individual counseling.
To be eligible for insurance reimbursement, the group psychotherapy session definition will be determined by the insurer and must meet their requirements. An example is that the patient's medical record must indicate the person participating n the group session has been diagnosed with a mental illness as defined in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9-CM) or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV). The insurer may require that the group psychotherapy service is directly performed by the billing physician, rather than psychologists, social workers, advanced practice nurse, etc.
