Public Advocate Law and Legal Definition
Public advocate means an advocate who intends to represent matters of public concern for the public at large. It is a governmental position similar to an ombudsman. A public advocate can be either an elected or appointed position, depending upon the jurisdiction. The public advocate's right to bring suit to implement the public advocate's power, even though not specifically set forth, is implied from the functional responsibility of the public advocate to investigate abuses in government.[ Green v. Safir, 174 Misc. 2d 400 (N.Y. Misc. 1997)]
