SafeSeaNet Tracking Information Relay and Exchange System STIRES Law and Legal Definition

STIRES could refer to “SafeSeaNet Tracking Information Relay and Exchange System.” SafeSeaNet is a European electronic reporting and information system for vessel traffic. STIRES is its new merchant ships tracking system that allows maritime administrations of member states of the European Union, Norway and Iceland to locate and control their fleets. It provides information on cargoes, ship safety records and port destinations, thus enabling the tracking of ship movements along the entire European Union coastline. STIRES facilitates exchange of information regarding merchant ships by interfacing with several existing and planned systems for supporting safety at sea, and for protecting the maritime environment as well as economic efficiency.
