School Districts Law and Legal Definition
School districts are special-purpose districts that serve to operate the local public primary and secondary schools. Public schools in school districts are mostly, under the control of the government. In most of the states of the U.S., school districts are local governments with powers similar to that of a city or a county including taxation and eminent domain. A school district is a legally separate body corporate and politic. However, a few states have no school systems independent of county or municipal governments.
