Scrivener Law and Legal Definition
A scrivener is a person who writes a document, such as a deed, for another, usually for a fee. If a lawyer merely writes out the terms of a lease or contract without giving legal advice, then the lawyer is probably not liable for legal malpractice for nonobvious errors, and be found to be just a scrivener. However, a non-lawyer who acts as a scrivener must be careful to avoid getting in trouble for practicing law without a license.
