Skilled Nursing Care Law and Legal Definition
Skilled nursing care means skilled services that can be performed safely and effectively only by or under the direct supervision of a licensed practical nurse or a registered nurse. In skilled nursing care, 24 hour supervision and medical treatment is rendered by a registered nurse, under the direction of a doctor. Administration of medicines, diagnostics, tube feeding, changing of wound dressings, and minor surgery is performed by or under the supervision of skilled professional or technical personnel. Skilled nursing care is usually provided on an inpatient basis at a hospital or skilled nursing facility under a doctor’s prescription. A service though unskilled will fall under the category of skilled nursing care, if because of special medical complications, its performance or supervision and the observation of a person necessitates the use of skilled nursing personnel.
