Speed Limit Law and Legal Definition
Speed limit refers to the maximum speed of a vehicle that is legally permitted on a given stretch of road. Speed limits are of two types:
1.maximum speed limit
2.minimum speed limit
In the U.S., speed limits vary from state to state. For example, in California, pursuant to Cal Veh Code § 22352, the prima facie speed limits are as follows:
1. Fifteen miles per hour:
a. When traversing a railway grade crossing,
b. When traversing any intersection of highways,
c. On any alley.
2.Twenty-five miles per hour:
On any highway other than a state highway, in any business or residence district unless a different speed is determined by local authority under procedures set forth in this code.
