Spill of National Significance Law and Legal Definition
According to 40 CFR 300.5 [Title 40. Protection Of Environment; Chapter I. Environmental Protection Agency; Subchapter J. Superfund, Emergency Planning, And Community Right-To-Know Programs, Part 300 National Oil And Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan, Subpart A Introduction], the term ‘spill of national significance (SONS)’ means “a spill that due to its severity, size, location, actual or potential impact on the public health and welfare or the environment, or the necessary response effort, is so complex that it requires extraordinary coordination of federal, state, local, and responsible party resources to contain and clean up the discharge.”
