Spouse Law and Legal Definition
Spouse means a married person. It can be person's lawfully married husband or wife. A few categories of spouses referred in law:
Putative Spouse: Refers to a spouse who cohabits with another on the bonafide belief that he or she is lawfully married to the other person.
Surviving spouse: A spouse who lives longer than the other spouse.
Innocent Spouse: This is used in relation to tax matters and refers to a spouse who is relieved of liability from taxes on income which the other spouse did not include on a joint tax return provided that the innocent spouse did not know and had no reason to know of the omission, and that it would be unfair under the circumstances to hold the innocent spouse liable.
