Standard Design Approval [Energy] Law and Legal Definition
According to 10 CFR 52.1 (a) [Title 10 – Energy; Chapter I -- Nuclear Regulatory Commission; Part 52 -- Licenses, Certifications, and Approvals for Nuclear Power Plants; General Provisions], the term standard design approval or design approval means “an NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) staff approval, issued under subpart E of this part (10 CFR 52), of a final standard design for a nuclear power reactor of the type described in 10 CFR 50.22. The approval may be for either the final design for the entire reactor facility or the final design of major portions thereof.”
