Statutory Off-Duty Period [Transportation] Law and Legal Definition
According to 49 CFR 228.5 [Title 49 – Transportation; Subtitle B -- Other Regulations Relating to Transportation; Chapter II -- Federal Railroad Administration, Department of Transportation; Part 228 -- Hours of Service of Railroad Employees; Subpart A – General], statutory off-duty period means “the period of 8 or 10 consecutive hours or more time, that is the minimum off-duty period required under the hours of service laws for a train employee or a signal employee to begin a new 24-hour period for the purposes of calculating his or her total time on duty.”
