Suspension of Deportation Law and Legal Definition
Suspension of deportation is a remedy in deportation proceedings which must be initiated before removal proceedings begin under the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 [IIRAIRA]. Suspension of deportation became enacted on April 1, 1997. This involves certain individuals who have been in the U.S. for seven or ten years and who met other criteria as set forth in former INA Section 244(a).
