Underinsured motorist refers to a driver who has liability coverage for his/her vehicle, but the amount of that driver's liability coverage is less than the amount of the victim's uninsured motorist’s coverage.

Underinsurance legislation is remedial in nature. Underinsured motorist coverage aims to provide additional indemnification for the insured person in accidents involving insured motorists with liability coverages that were not sufficient to provide complete compensation for the insured person
