United States Postal Inspection Service Law and Legal Definition
The United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) is one of the oldest federal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. It is the primary law enforcement arm of the United States Postal Service. The USPIS fights against criminals who attack the U.S. postal system and misuse it to defraud, endanger, or otherwise threaten the American public.
The USPIS mission is “to support and protect the U.S. Postal Service and its employees, infrastructure, and customers; enforce the laws that defend the nation’s mail system from illegal or dangerous use; and ensure public trust in the mail.”
The USPIS is a highly specialized, professional organization performing investigative and security functions needed for a stable and sound postal system. It also assists in numerous joint federal and state investigations.
