Verbis Standum Ubi Nulla Ambiguitas Law and Legal Definition
The maxim verbis standum ubi nulla ambiguitas means when the words of a deed express no ambiguity, one must abide by the same words. This is a primary rule of construction or interpretation. In interpretation of a statute, if the words in the deed appear ambiguous, it becomes necessary to ascertain the meaning of the word by looking to the circumstances of origin of the deed and its object. Interpretation or construction is put on ambiguous terms to ascertain the correct intention of the writer. However, when the terms are clear, plain and distinct such construction or interpretation is not permitted.
