Vessel Identification System Law and Legal Definition
The Vessel Identification System (“System”) is a system in which Secretary of Transportation (“Secretary”) may exempt a vessel under an international agreement to which the U.S. government is a party. It is established pursuant to 46 USCS §§ 5101. Under this system, the Secretary issues a certificate of exemption. The Secretary establishes a vessel identification system to make available information for use by the public for law enforcement and other purposes relating to:
1. the ownership of documented vessels;
2. the ownership of vessels numbered; and
3. the ownership of vessels titled under the law of a state.
The system also includes information prescribed by the Secretary including:
1. identification of a vessel;
2. identification of the owner of the vessel,
3.identification of the owner's social security number or, if that number is not available, other means of identification acceptable to the Secretary;
4.other information assisting law enforcement officials.
