Voting System Standards Law and Legal Definition
Voting System Standards are a set of requirements that need to be followed in all voting systems. The standards are put forward by the Help America Vote Act, 2002. The requirements include :
1. to permit the voter to verify the votes selected by the voter on the ballot before the ballot is cast and counted;
2. to provide the voter with the opportunity to change the ballot or correct any error before the ballot is cast and counted; and
3. to notify the voter of over votes and provide the voter a chance to correct these errors.
In addition to these basic requirements the act has also put forward certain other requirements which need to be followed by the states that do not use electronic equipment to assist voters with detecting errors. They include:
1. establish a voter education program, specific to that voting system, that notifies each voter of the effect of casting multiple votes for an office; and
2. provide the voter with instructions on how to correct the ballot before it is cast and counted.
