White Bonnet Law and Legal Definition
White bonnet is a term used to refer to a sham bidder or a puffer at an auction sale. S/he is a person who, without having any intention to purchase, is employed by the seller at an auction to raise the price by fictitious bids. White bonnets are employed with an intention of increasing competition among the bidders. Such persons have secret understanding with the seller, and they are not bound by their bids.
A white bonnet is also known as puffers, by-bidders, cappers, or decoy ducks.
