Wireless Communications [Railroad Communications] Law and Legal Definition
According to 49 CFR 220.5 [Title 49 – Transportation; Subtitle B -- Other Regulations Relating to Transportation; Chapter II -- Federal Railroad Administration, Department of Transportation; Part 220 -- Railroad Communications; Subpart A – General], working wireless communications means “the capability to communicate with either a control center or the emergency responder of a railroad through such means as radio, portable radio, cellular telephone, or other means of two-way communication, from any location within the rail system, except:
(1) Tunnels or other localized places of extreme topography, and
(2) Temporary lapses of coverage due to atmospheric or topographic conditions. In the case of joint operations on another railroad, the radio must be able to reach the control center of the host railroad.”
