True Bill Law & Legal Definition

A "true bill of indictment" is the agreement of a grand jury probable cause exists to order a defendant to stand trial on the charges in the indictment. When this occurs, the grand jury is said to have "indicted" the defendant. The defendant can then be brought to trial. If the grand jury returns a "not a true bill", they were unable to find probable cause needed to indict the accused.
