Gas Fraud Law and Legal Definition
Gas fraud typically involves deceptive practices at gas pumps. Fraud could be committed through pumps where the mechanism for counting the amount of gasoline turns faster than it is supposed to. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) assists local, state and federal governments by setting forth uniform standards for measurements, laws and practices. The NIST shuts down any pumps that measure a difference greater than 3.3 ounces per every 5 gallons of gasoline.
Any fraudulent activity should be reported to the Department of Agriculture office in each state. Every pump and gas station should have their state's office phone number posted. You can also report gas pump fraud to your local attorney general and your state Better Business Bureau.
