Gatekeeper (Health Care) Law and Legal Definition
A gatekeeper is the person who coordinates care in a managed care plan. It is the term used to describe the role of the primary care physician in an HMO plan. In an HMO, the gatekeepers are the first persons of contact for questions about health care needs. A gate keeper also approves referrals to specialists, hospitals, laboratories, and other medical services.
