The Goldwater-Nichols Act of 1986 made changes to the U.S. Department of Defense. The Act gives responsibility for training and equipping personnel for the unified combatant commands. The Act aims at improving the ability of the U.S. armed forces to conduct joined and combined operations in the field and also to improve the budget process of the department.
