Heriot Law and Legal Definition
Heriot refers to a tribute or service rendered to a feudal lord on the death of a tenant. It is an English right to chattels of a deceased tenant, reserved in a grant or lease. It was formerly a death-duty in late Anglo-Saxon England, which required that at death, a nobleman provided to his king a given set of military equipment, often including horses, swords, shields, spears and helmets.
