Homeland Defense Law and Legal Definition
Homeland defense means the protection of U.S. sovereignty, territory, domestic population, and critical defense infrastructure against foreign threats and aggression, or other threats. Homeland defense are conducted by the Department of Defense (DOD) whenever the U.S. President, exercising constitutional authority as Commander in Chief, authorizes military actions. The mission of DOD’s homeland defense also includes domestic air defense. As part of the homeland defense the Congress authorizes the Army to build or strengthen fixed harbor defenses and the Navy to build blue-water ships to defend America's right to the sea lanes.
