A hot court, refers to an appellate court, that is familiar with briefs filed in the case. Familiarity with the briefs help the court to understand the issues involved in the case even before hearing the oral arguments. Generally, a hot court controls the oral argument with its questioning rather than listening passively to the presentations of the counsel.
