House Arrest Bracelet Law and Legal Definition

A house arrest bracelet is an ankle bracelet that is semi-permanently attached to the ankle of a person under house arrest. Some courts offer house arrest to certain less serious criminal offenders in an effort to conserve jail space, tax dollars, and other law enforcement resources. When the offender is under house arrest s/he has to wear a house arrest bracelet. This bracelet is an electronic monitoring device that transmits a signal notifying the authorities of the exact whereabouts of the detained individual. Such bracelet is typically used during level 4 probation to ensure that the wearer stays at home during prescribed hours.

This bracelet typically comes in the form of an ankle bracelet. It is about the size of a large watch and attaches to the ankle with a set of snap rivets. It is difficult for the offender to remove the bracelet. Many devices trigger an alarm if they are tampered with.
