Human Rights Instrument Law and Legal Definition
Human rights instrument means a formal written document prepared by a state or states in which the basic human rights are set forth as non-binding principles. It also codifies the rights that are legally binding on those states which such states ratify and accept as a covenant, treaty, or convention.
The international human rights instrument can be classified into two categories, declarations and conventions. It can be further classified into global instruments and regional instruments. The three principal regional human rights instruments are the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, the American Convention on Human Rights (the Americas), and the European Convention on Human Rights.
