Id Est Law and Legal Definition
Id est is a Latin phrase which means ‘that is’ in English. It is often abbreviated as ‘i.e.’"Id est" is used in place of "in other words," or "it/that is." The term is followed by a definition or list of items or options that relate to a preceding statement or condition. It specifies or makes clear the preceding statement. Id est is different from exempli gratia (e.g.) - for example - that gives some, but not all, examples of the items or options.
