In Pios Usus is a Latin term which means for pious uses or for religious purposes. For example, property of an intestate, who had no known heirs. It includes property claimed by, or used by the church. It is a great abuse which the ecclesiastics made of their power, by taking the whole of the dead man's estate to themselves in pios usus.
