Institute of Educational Sciences [IES] Law and Legal Definition
The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is the primary research arm of the U.S. Department of Education. IES was established as part of the Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002 to advance the field of education research. IES carries out its work through four Centers: the National Center for Education Research, the National Center for Education Statistics, the National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance, and the National Center for Special Education Research. IES aims to provide rigorous and relevant evidence to ground education practice and policy and share the information broadly.
IES functions include:
(1)funding top educational researchers nationwide to conduct studies seeking answers on what works for students from preschools to post secondary;
(2)collecting and analyzing statistics on the condition of education;
(3)conducting long-term longitudinal studies and surveys;
(4)supporting international assessments;
(5)preparing Nation's Report Card; and
(6)informing the public and reach out to practitioners with a variety of dissemination strategies and technical assistance programs.
