Institutional Research Law and Legal Definition
The sum total of all activities describing the full range of functions at a college or university comes under institutional research. All the educational and administrative functions as well as all internal and external environments are integrated in institutional research. In a broader sense, institutional research is an extensive kind of activity performed at colleges and universities to inform campus decision-making and planning in the areas of: admissions, financial aid, curriculum, enrollment management, staffing, student life, finance, facilities, alumni relations, and athletics.
Institutional researchers collect, analyze, report data on the institution's students, faculty, staff, curriculum, and course offerings. The information is usually submitted to government bodies, public, and college book publishers. Additionally, institutional researchers engage in data analysis. The qualities of an institutional researcher include knowledge of statistical research methods and computer based reporting tools.
