Insurance Automobile Law and Legal Definition
In many states, statutes have been enacted that make it mandatory to carry of liability insurance in order for a motor vehicle to be operated on public highways. Failure to comply with these statutes can lead to the revocation or suspension of driving privileges. Other states have enacted financial responsibility laws that require a person who has had a motor vehicle accident to obtain liability insurance or to furnish other proof of financial responsibility in ordre not to have a license supended or revoked, or as a condition of reinstatement of operators' licenses that have been suspended. Some states' statutes require automobile insurance policies to provide coverage to protect an insured who is injured through the fault of a motorist who is not insured, or is a hit-and-run driver, and for "assigned risk" plans, under which motorists who cannot voluntarily obtain the requisite compulsory insurance can be insured.
