International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code Law and Legal Definition
International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code) signifies the regulations published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for transporting hazardous materials by water on vessel internationally. IMDG Code is intended to protect crew members and to prevent marine pollution in the safe transportation of hazardous materials by vessel. The implementation of the Code is mandatory in conjunction with the obligations of the members of United Nation government under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78). The code is updated and maintained by the DSC Sub-Committee of the International Maritime Organization every 2 years.
IMDG Code was formulated in the fourth IMO Assembly in 1965. Under the IMDG Code, dangerous goods are classified into different classes and subclasses and the characteristics and properties of the substances, material and articles which would fall within each class or division are explained. Individual dangerous goods are listed in the Dangerous Goods List, with the class and any specific requirements. The classification has to be made by the shipper/consignor or by the appropriate competent authority where specified in the Code. The dangerous materials are classified into class 1, 2 etc. Accordingly class 1 comprise of explosives, followed by gases, flammable liquids, flammable solids, self-reactive substances and desensitized explosives, substances liable to spontaneous combustion, substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases, Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides, toxic and infectious substances, radioactive material and corrosive substances.
