Iqta'a Law and Legal Definition
Early Islamic societies practiced a type of land tenure system known as iqta'a. Under this system an individual is awarded the right of usufruct over land by the political leaders usually in exchange for military service for a limited period of time. In other words, it is an Islamic form of feudalism, to give away the land as income to military commanders in return for their military service.
