Knights of the Garter Law and Legal Definition
Knights of the garter is the highest order of British knighthood, ranking next after the nobility. The order was first instituted by Edward the Third in 1344, and was also called the order of St. George. It was open to women since 1987. It consists of the sovereign, 24 knight companions, and extra members created by statute.
